Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day,” is the commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. In 1862, white slave owners migrated to the Confederate state of Texas with over 150,000 enslaved black people, to escape the clutches of the Union Army who had just captured New Orleans. However, in 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective, liberating enslaved black people, except for in Texas.
For the next 3 years, chattel slavery remained in full effect, despite the remainder of the country’s black population being free. It wasn’t until June 19, 1865, when over 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas to free more than 250,000 enslaved black people by executive decree.
The United States’ second independence day was marked by this event, branded Juneteenth by the newly freed black Texans.
