Used in Ghana since the 11th century, strip-weaving is a textile technique that includes a multitude of thin strips of cloth handwoven together to produce a fabric. In the 17th century, the Ashanti King, Osei Tutu, commissioned the Akyimpimhene to send students from the towns of Adanwomase, Asotwe, Bonwire, and Wonoo to study strip-weaving in Bontuku–a small town in the Ivory Coast. Upon their return, they brought with them a swatch with Sesea patterns–considered the original Kente cloth design–used to study and reproduce at the king’s demand. To this day, these swatches are secured in the chief’s house in Adansomaso. Using their own colors, patterns, and designs, the students gave birth to the Kente Cloth. Adanwomase is considered a royal village of producers of the Kente Cloth.
